Population of Bali
The Population of Bali
The Population of Bali is growing at an experiential rate, the current statistics on the islands population puts the total to 4.22 million inhabitants, this has increased massively in the last ten years from the original figure of 3.89 million in the last 50 years Bali has seen an average of a 2.15 percent growth in population. This marked growth is largely to do with Bali’s status as a world class tourist destination and as such has a much more attractive economy then some of the other poorer areas of Indonesia, massive urbanization has allowed more people to live and work on the Island and boost the economy attracting more migrants. Bali also has a large birth rate which again is increasing the population still further. The majority of the population of Bali roughly (83.5%) is Hindu and adheres to Balinese Hinduism, this is a formation of traditional local beliefs and customs and larger Hindu influences from the Southeast and Southern Asian communities. Minority religions such as Islam (13.3%) Christianity (1.7%) and Buddhism (0.5%) make up the rest of Bali’s population demographic.
Bali has a small Expat population predominantly in the areas around Sanur and Jimbaran, this community is made up of hoteliers, business people, and people (largely Australian in origin) who chose to make Bali their permanent home and decide to retire here. People from Sumatra, Java and Borneo also venture to Bali in their droves because of the better opportunities, better living standards and some to try and snag a rich western husband. The average wage for an unskilled worker in Bali say a Bar girl is 1.2 million rupiah, which equates to about 100 dollars US per month, although to a western worker this wage is pitifully low it is in fact a lot higher than a similar job in Java or Sumatra also the wage has the added bonus of tips attached meaning the girls if they are good at English can get that little extra from drinkers and restaurant goers. The population in Bali is on the rise and with more tourists flocking to the island the population figure will only increase.
